Kinja'd!!!

We looked at a Toyota Sequoia... very nice truck inside and good pickup, great 4WD system... but the $53k price is a bit much. Toyota said $4k down, lease for 36 months for freaking $560 a month...

So my Dad went to look at a Pathfinder but I STRONGLY suggested don't see it as a viable option cause it's not what it used to be... unibody, CVT, 4WD system is fine but we drove both and the Toyota had a better 4WD system... you could tell the rear wheels were doing just what it was supposed to in 4-lo + locker enabled.

Looked at Durango, but no locking diff so that's a no. Trying to get them to look at a Tahoe... and no, they'll NEVER EVER EVER buy preowned/used/etc. Silly, I know.

Now I'm curious, why is diff lock essential? From what I can tell this more of a family carrier and not a rock crawler, or is this a devious plan to eventually get the hand me down with lockers?

Originally looked at a Ram 1500 4wd 5.7L, MSRP was low-40s and it was $430/mo. pretty reasonable with only $2k down WITHOUT haggling... but the rest of the family raged on my dad and I :(((((((

Do they live up a driveway that gets slippery in the winter or something like that?

Or are they totally badass and wheel a full-size, new SUV?

Yeah our driveway is slippery, sloping, twisting, and hilly. And there's a ditch next to it if you fuck up.

I've seen Subarus slide down, various AWD crossovers, FWD vehicles...

Kinja'd!!!0

Honestly I don't think you need lockers for that, if anything LSD and a good set of snow tires would be more than enough for what you want. Sure lockers are awesome but the only time you really need locking differential is if you're running trails that will 9 times out of 10 cause body damage and require wheels 35"+.

Edit: LSD as in limited slip differential not the other fun kind.

I love my Tacoma, I love Toyota trucks. They're made in the USA, are dependable, and are a great value. It's a shame the Sequoia is a little out of your price range.

Unless you are a contractor or necessitate a bed, p/u trucks are a real waste. They have terrible weight distribution effecting winter handling - 4wd or not. And full sized pickups are huge ! I used to drive a diesel 3500 MTX w/40' 5th wheel trailer at work and thought i 'needed' a p/u in my life. I wised up over time. The Durango/JGC platform is solid... Only bummer for me is that the JGC is not offered with a third row, and I like to have the space for people. Inly the Durango offers the third row, but no diesel... yet.

I slightly disagree with your requirements for a rear locker. My truck is open/open right now and I've ran into situations on the trail where a locker would have got me unstuck in a jiffy. Tacoma folks run air lockers f/r all the time often never deviating from 33s.

In your defense though on that same trail, I suffered minor body damage and larger tires would have been incredibly more effective than my 32s.

My parents have an 07 tahoe (previous gen). Great all around short suv. They got it used though, so in terms of price, that sequoia would be my pick.

It will be hard to find a similar sized SUV to a sequoia or suburban for less money brand new. Its a tough one. Maybe just tell them they will feel better spending a tad more rather than having to settle for something less. If they really are gonna get some use out of the truck as a whole, its worth whatever they can get it for.

Yeah, and expensive too. I've spent quite a shit ton of money on my rig and I haven't even gotten to lockers yet lol. But I've got a center locker and the TC does an excellent job filling in for LSD (it applies brakes to prevent wheel slip).

I have a LSD in my truck. I still want lockers. I've recently bought a whole mid-travel setup for it, but ran out of time to install so I have to pay a shop. $$$

We spend money to build something that drives over things that we hope we don't damage while driving over things that can damage the thing we've spent so much money on. How strange, ahaha.

Kinja'd!!!0

You're mistaken. The Sequoia doesn't have a rear locker. It locks the center diff when you use 4wd low range.

The Pathfinder is a car-based awd system that has a sorta lock mode but no low range.

The Durango has a VERY similar transfer case to the Sequoia, that locks the center diff in low range.

If they like how the 4wd works on the Sequoia, they'll probably like the Durango.

Considering a GC actually, he's bent on the Pathfinder. I'm even willing to compromise with the GC, so long as it is either 5.7L or 3.0L diesel.

FUCK the Wrangler. We have one right now and we're replacing it. No way we're going back... even with the Pentastar engine. It's too uncomfortable and the interior space isn't anything special.

What's so wrong with awd? I just picked up my friend who go stuck in his 4wd bro-truck in the snow with my lesbowagon (forester). Literally going through snow drifts up to my hood with a foot of snow all over. I think your seriously under estimating awd.

I have a Forester already but Subaru and Audi have the *best* AWD systems out there, hands down. The Forester never gave me issues (but my cousin slid down our driveway, that was a scary moment, in his 2010 Outback).

My driveway is hilly, sloping, winding, and there's a ditch next to it. Going down isn't much of an issue... coming up can be very very very dangerous.

Just take this as a suggestion but I wouldn't recommend a SUV for going up a hill unless clearance is an issue. You want something light and nimble with awd/4wd and a good set of snows. Why not consider a new forester?

True. Although I do feel like Land Rover has improved a lot over the past couple of years. They could probably find a lightly used dealer car for like 40k and have locking diff's, low range, adjustable suspension, and a very good tow rating.

I own a Disco so I'm pretty partial to Rovers, and I need to keep reminding myself that they aren't for everybody.

well, but all it does...technically...is engage true 4wd, like a regular truck without a center differential. You wouldn't notice much difference with that Torsen differential.

I did this entire feature forgetting to lock my center diff.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

and my center diff is a vastly inferior viscous coupling unit. For a long time, Land Rovers didn't even have locking center diffs, just brake based torque split. This video illustrates the confusion and capabilities of the sequoia pretty well.

I don;t think we'll *ever* do rock crawling like that but the Sequoia blasted through a foot of snow the other day. We're happy with it, no complaints other than MPG (but that's expected with a 5.7L nearly 3 ton vehicle). I will say it turns rather sharply for its size, better than the Wrangler it replaced.
